Interesting article about Angola's oil in today's NY Times with some good commentary about the corruption here. I particularly liked the final line:
“Angola has no interest in transparency and there is no source of external leverage on the government right now,” said Monica Enfield, an analyst at PFC Energy, a consulting firm in Washington. “With all their oil revenue, they don’t need the I.M.F. or the World Bank. They can play the Chinese off the Americans.”

Hey, two things:
1. The article in NYTimes is very good. Those of us who follow news in Angola and have a minute of knowledge about it tend to get tired of the same old cliches, though ("A corrupt, underdeveloped and war-scarred country," for example)
2. There's an error in your link to "Tony and Lotty" - I think there's a "/" too much at the end of the URL. You should look over it.

Thanks for the note about the link...changed. I agree that the same old adage that you mention is tiring and there is much more that the country has to offer than the negative comments it seems to attract. That said, at least in Luanda, the growing difference between those who have, and have a lot, and those who have little (material and security wise) is difficult not to concentrate on. There is so much development here and the country is still only 5 years out of war...but if those who are making billions and putting it in off-shore accounts even took some percentage of that money reinvested it in the much needed infrustructure here it would serve everyone's interests in the long term.
There's clearly a lot of work going on here and a lot changing, as you know. But the corruption is equally mind-boggling...but then again, what nation isn't corrupt! Certainly Angola has many friends, around the world, in that club!
